Next up on #MeetThePNMember is Essence Foods

A range of high fruit, reduced sugar conserves with natural botanicals, along with a range of marmalades.

In 2005, Sarah Savage of Essence Foods launched a range of high fruit, reduced sugar conserves with natural botanicals, along with a range of marmalades. We were the first company in Norfolk to use lavender in our products along with other botanicals.

This love of working with lavender and botanicals, has lead Sarah to undertake, and pass, a full time BSc degree at Lincoln University in Herbal Medicine.  Not only do the products taste unique and wonderful but a complete understanding of the herbs and spices has allowed us to undertake further  unique, original and innovative product development with new launches on the way next year.

Since then, the range has continued to grow.  In 2016, Edward Savage (Sarahs’ eldest son) joined the business full time and added the Montys brand to our range for all our savoury products and mustards.  With tastings and discussion evenings at The Lansdowne Club undertaken in understanding mustards and how they combine with various sausages.

Essence Foods has supplied Waitrose since 2006 and also supply the East of England Co-op with three Essence products and three Montys products.

A couple of years later, the Beetella brand was launched offering healthy chocolate spreads which contain no palm oil, are gluten free, low sugar and use natural clean label ingredients.

We have won Gold Awards in The Great Taste Awards over the 15 years we have been established across all the ranges and Gold in The World Marmalade Awards.

We were also founding members of the Proudly Norfolk initiative, believing firmly that products made in Norfolk by artisan producers should be highlighted (rather than products made out of county being labelled as being made anywhere in Norfolk but labelled as such) rather than misleading the consumer.

In 2019 we had mustard grown for us, the only independent company to achieve this.  This was the first time in approximately 140 years that mustard had been grown in Norfolk for an independent food manufacturer and not Colmans.

Our mustards are the only mustards made in Norfolk, by hand, by us, using our own Norfolk mustard.  As a small family firm, we are very proud of our product integrity, product quality and traceability.  We make over 19 different mustards and the range continues to expand to meet customer demand.  We love making Norfolk mustards for Norfolk people using our own Norfolk mustard.

In November we are launching another new product, with more to follow.

Lockdown saw the business being tested in a way unlike any other, with the brave decision being made to move the business during lockdown to exciting new premises. We moved the business to The Old Dairy, Stanfield.  On 16th July, we opened a café and have a shop onsite as well as production kitchens, where customers can buy all of our ranges.  With 28 years experience, having set up a food shop in central Norwich in 1992 called Logans, The Savages are going back to their roots, where food is made freshly on site and all our condiments and preserves are incorporated within the menus.  Customers love being able to taste and try our products before buying them in our shop.

In September 2020, Archie Savage (Sarahs’ youngest son) also joined the business full time as Sales Manager to strengthen and develop trade contacts and wholesale enquiries as well as promoting our unique and authentic products.

Any trade and wholesale enquiries should be addressed to, for all other communication,
